Book Review-Swami and Friends
Book Review: Keerthana from Team Samarpan
Book title: Swami and Friends
Author: R.K.Narayan
R.K.Narayan (Raispuram Krishnaswami lyer Narayanaswami) was an Indian writer known for his set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. He won Padma Vibhushan, Sahitya Akademi Fellowship and Benson medal award. He was the leading author of early Indian literature in English.
He wrote the fictitious novel “Swami and Friends’’ which is a story of the tumultuous friendship of Swaminathan. His four childhood friends, and a new boy confront each other and they realise they have a lot in common, and become best friends fast. Swami talks about how different all of his friends are from one another and how their differences actually make their friendship stronger.
Swami is ten years old, and life for him consists mainly of having adventures with his friends, avoiding the misery of homework, and coping as best as he can with the teachers and other adults he encounters.
His greatest passion is the MCC- the Malgudi Cricket Club – which he founded together with his friends. His greatest day is when exams are over and school breaks up – a time for revelry and cheerful riotousness but the innocent and impulsive Swami lands in trouble when he is carried away by the more serious unrest of India 1930. Somehow he gets himself expelled from two schools in succession, when things have gone quite out of control he is forced to run away from home.
‘It is a book in ten thousand’ said Graham Greene about this book.
I enjoyed reading this book 🙂
I learnt moral values such as honesty, integrity, proper behaviour, learning from your mistakes, respecting elders and working hard. Swaminathan used to work hard and he was always passionate about cricket. Regarding this, I also learnt to work hard and be passionate about what I do.
