Book Review-How I taught my Grandmother to read and other Stories

Book Review: Chandana from team Saahas

Book Title: How I Taught my grandmother to read and other stories

Author: Sudha Murthy

This book is all about Sudha Murthy – a great author’s experiences, what she has learnt from them and some popular folk tales.

It talks about her real-life incidents which are very inspiring. The book takes us on a journey from her childhood to adulthood, from her career to a compassionate teacher to a critical thinker and from a wife to a mother.

This book is recommended to children as well as adults. It has all the experiences, life values and learnings which a person should have at any age. It is a wonderful book which engages and makes the reader desire to read more and more.

All these stories have touched my heart. Even the story with the same title as the book is a real life incident, where Sudha Murthy teaches her grandmother how to read Kannada. This story emphasizes the need for education and the strong will that can help cross many barriers of self and society at an older age too.

Another favorite piece from the book is a story titled ‘A Journey Through the Desert’. This is a story of 2 boys who used to clean Sudha Murthy’s car at a petrol pump.

She used to narrate stories to them from famous classics and used to gift them books as these boys were interested in reading and saved money to join night school to continue their studies. How in life one single story impacts one of the brothers is a worthy read. One wisdom thought can change a person’s living is what this story depicts.
